和田机场是我国西部主要的军事机场之一，也是重要的军民两用机场。
和田机场距离最近纷争不断的中印边境“拉达克地区”大约有300公里，距印度首都新德里也只有900多公里。
而和田地区虽然地处遍布雪山高原和大漠的大西北，但海拔实际并不高，只有1000多米，正常人在2500米以上的海拔才可能会出现高反，因此部队在和田地区也不需要安排长时间去适应环境。
并且，和田机场地处喀喇昆仑山与塔克拉玛干大沙漠之间，气候干燥，非常适合飞机的保存，尤其适合保养隐形战斗机的隐形涂层。
和田机场一带，包括喀什机场在内，真的是少数可以控制整个高原制空权的低海拔机场优良选址。
而且，这些机场位置给人的印象上不是很靠近边境，避免在中印关系火上浇油：我们是在自家里磨刀，并不是跑到你家门前去磨，你激动个鸡儿。
2017年中国红剑联合演习中，歼20在模拟演习对抗中，以10：0的绝对优势完胜歼10、歼11、苏30等所有四代机。
在2018年的“金头盔”比赛中，两架歼20对抗8架歼11B，半小时内，歼20模拟击落歼11B达72次，自身无一损失。
